What is the first thing you think of when someone says
"State Fair"? Is it food, animals, exhibits, midway?
It is a rarity that Americans celebrate anything without FOOD. Thanksgiving without the Turkey or the 4th of July without hamburgers and hotdogs just wouldn’t be complete! Nor would the Fair without…well…. funnel cakes, elelphant ears, corndogs, polish sausage, roasted corn, pork BBQ or Ehler's ice cream!
Clara shared her funnel cake.
Not Clara's hands
It may surprise you however, what's new in Fair Food!
Earlier, on our way into to the fair's exhibit hall
we had to try the latest!
Deep-fried Derby Pie! (a uniquely Kentucky Confection)
AND
Fried Kool-Aid! was introduced to fairgoers this year, proving once again there is nothing you can’t deep-fry.
This unusual concoction is a combination of funnel cake batter and cherry Kool-Aid powder that dissolves as it is heated. Crispy on the out side and googy on the inside - two thumbs down on this one.
What's your favorite?
Whatever your favorite is, you can probably find it somewhere in the Competitive Entries department. Rows and rows of photography, paintings, drawings and textiles present the interest and amazing talent of Kentuckians. Colorful and monochromatic photos of parks, people and textures jump off the paper and inspire, delight and intrigue. Paintings and drawings range from realistic to impressionistic.
Even the neighboring homemade wines take inspiration from their fine arts friends with labels that could have placed well in the painting and drawing categories.
Beyond the Christmas trees (who knew this was a category?),
are the woodworking and wood carving exhibits.
Textiles
The textiles are my favorites.

Counted Cross-stitch
Blue and Red ribbons awarded to Elaine Esterle, sister-in-law to Rose.
Large, handmade quilts look more like paintings or stained glass than fabrics.

Loved seeing the interesting foods, wonderful array of entries and especially your spending time with your friends. Love and miss you and wish we could be there.

as usual, great pix, and good times..
Just wanted to take a minute to say how glad I was that we were able to once again attend the State Fair today ... I have to admit that I got very tired several times..the slow pace we go when looking at some things wears me out . I find myself wanting to take more breaks with greater frequency. But I did enjoy what I saw...and of course the company.
I looked at all the pictures. How did you get the pictures of the food? I always enjoy the friends and the fair!
Nicolaas tried the Crispy Creme Bacon Cheese Burger when we took him to see a comedian at the fair last year. He said it was the best burger ever and keeps trying to get me to make them here at home. LOL
